Fitness: The Ultimate Investment in Your Health and Wealth
We live in a ‘work hard, play hard’ society. It celebrates wealth and success that often comes at the expense of our wellbeing and health. Which is odd. Who would consider any other animal as 'succeeding' if its health was failing among its collection of trinkets.
At the same time, displaying the appearance of fitness has become a status symbol for some. I read recently about the boom in the use of steroids in the UK. It’s not just among people working out, but in people who don’t, but who want to look buffed in the nightclub.
There’s also the use of botox and cosmetic surgery among the glitterati. They seem to be trying to extend their ability to live up to a cinematic version of health and beauty, at odds with reality.
True health and fitness takes time, not money. But in our pressurised world, time can be something of a luxury. It’s not one all of us can afford. I am reminded of how apt it was to call the doco about Anton Krupicka’s once epic training schedule, 'indulgence'. He readily acknowledges the privilege of having time to run, as all of us should. A truly fair society would allow everybody good access to what is today a privilege, but was once universal.
So we can see how our training is one of the most valuable investments we could make in ourselves. It also has one of the best returns. So share the wealth! Encourage and support friends and family looking to train and allow them to make it a priority. And treasure your own training - luxuriate in it. After all it’s nice to think that by the end of a trail run we might be filthy and stinking, but we are also filthy stinking rich.
